History

The fourth generation, the Porsche 993.

For every Porsche enthusiast, the fourth generation of the 911, better known as 993, is one of the most sought-after versions in the history of this classic. This new model that appeared on the market in 1993 was full of the characteristic 911 DNA. It was the successor to the 964. The doors and roof of the 993 and 964 were identical in both generations. The 993 was certainly not a facelift of the 964. The 993 received a completely new body (apart from the aforementioned similarities), with the wider wheel arches being particularly striking. The beautiful elegant shape, integrated bumpers, the shapes of the windows, its wide rear and the sloping red band between the rear lights will delight every car enthusiast. Even the flatter front wings made possible by the use of new polyellipsoid headlights are quickly gaining approval from Porsche enthusiasts.

As far as the rear fenders are concerned, the Carrera, the Carrera 4, the Carrera 4 Cabriolet, the Targa and the Carrera RS have a so-called 'narrow body' (code M493).

On the Carrera S, 4S, Turbo and Turbo S, the rear fenders have been widened by a total of about 30 mm per side, making these variants look even more impressive. (+ 60 mm in total). By the way, the 993 GT2 is even wider at the rear.

Multi-link suspension

The 993 also underlines its exceptional position in sports car land in terms of technology, for example with the completely new aluminum LSA suspension. It combines lightweight construction, stability and maneuverability. To date, the multi-link suspension is considered the ultimate development stage of the rear axle of the Weissach development center, which has made history with its self-steering properties. The result: even more driving dynamics and further improved suspension comfort.
Various models

Porsche initially only offered the 993 as a coupe and convertible. The Targa debuted in 1995. In contrast to its predecessors with the iconic targa bracket and removable roof, the 993 Targa has a large glass sliding roof that can disappear electrically under the rear window.

In addition, the 993 has another body variant: the four-wheel drive Carrera 4S (from 1996) - followed shortly afterwards by the Carrera S in 1997 (also known as the 2S). These latter versions were only available as a coupe and all powered by the 285 hp Flat-6.

In fact, both of these models use the wide body and chassis of the 911 Turbo, but do not have the large rear wing that characterizes the Turbo. Aesthetically, the Porsche S and 4S are distinguished by cosmetic details (black brake calipers for the S, red for the 4S, and with a single rear grille for the 4S.)
These heavier brakes ensure that you stop in 2.6 seconds from one hundred kilometers per hour. A sprint to 100 km/h takes 5.3 seconds and the top speed is 270 kilometers per hour.

Performance

The 993 has an additional reason why the model is so popular with collectors and fans all over the world: it is the last 911 to be equipped with an air-cooled boxer engine. Initially, the 993 Carrera with its two-valve technology and double ignition produces 272 hp. But from model year 1995, that power increased to 285 hp; A 300 hp variant is also optionally available. New to the 993 is the six-speed manual gearbox, which ensures a top speed of more than 270 km/h. In addition, the new six-speed gearbox shifts much more precisely. In 1995 it became possible for the first time to operate the Tiptronic automatic transmission via the steering wheel, something that was unique for road cars at the time.

For Porsche, the 993 is a model that secures the future of the brand. With the fourth generation of the iconic sports car, the chapter of air-cooled engines ends after 68,881 units in 1998 and a new era begins after 35 years: the era of the water-cooled 911.

The last 993 rolled off the production line four days after the death of Ferdinand Alexander Porsche: a blue Carrera 4S, intended for the actor Jerry Seinfeld.
The ultimate Porsche.
The 993 Carrera 4S is the most beautiful of all Porsches. The beautiful lines, the wide hips, the lack of a spoiler and the slightly sportier bumpers complete the picture. In terms of interior, the 993 also has that wonderful “old 911 feeling”.
