History Porsche 928

During the design phase of the 928, which went into production from model year 1978, the focus was on lightweight construction. The doors, wings and hood were therefore made of aluminum instead of sheet steel. Behind the plastic bumpers, integrated into the body shape, were also aluminum profiles that could withstand a collision of up to 8 km/h (5 mph).

The 928 had round, electrically operated pop-up headlights that were integrated into the wings. The round rear was dominated by a large window in the tailgate.

The 928 models were powered by a water-cooled V8 engine with the cylinders at an angle of 90°. The engine's displacement increased from the initial 4.5 liters to 5.4 liters. The power was transmitted via the transaxle principle.

To improve aerodynamics, models from model 928 S (model year 1979) were equipped with a front and rear spoiler.

The rear axle of the 928 was a completely new development. What made this double wishbone suspension, also known as the Weissach axle, unique was its stabilizing toe-in effect. This worked more or less like passive rear-wheel steering, which contributed significantly to the Gran Turismo's active safety.

928 (model year 1978 - 1982)
The round rear without a rear spoiler was an unmistakable and distinguishing feature of the 928. Unlike later successors, this model had no front or rear spoiler. The 4.5-liter engine of the 928 produced 240 hp.

928 S (model year 1980 - 1986)
The 928 S had a black front and rear spoiler, side protection strips in the body color and side indicators. The engine capacity increased from the initial 4.7 liters to 5.0 liters (model year 1986). The power was 300 hp and increased to 310 hp from model year 1984 and 288 hp (with catalytic converter) from model year 1986.

928 S4 (model year 1987 - 1991)
The 928 S4 had a rounded bumper with air intake vents. The sloping rear featured a black rear spoiler that stood away from the body between the wide, flush-mounted taillights. Its 5.0-liter engine produced 320 horsepower.

928 GT (Spring 1989 - Model Year 1991)
The 928 GT was sportier than the 928 S4. Thanks to several modifications, the engine delivered a maximum of 330 hp. The GT was supplied as standard without side protection strips but with rims in a unique design.

928 GTS (model year 1992 - 1995)
The final evolutionary phase of the 928 model included widened rear wheel arches, a red rear lighting panel, a body-coloured rear spoiler, Cup design exterior mirrors and standard 17" Cup wheels. The GTS's 5.4 liter engine delivered 350 hp.
